The south of the country to this day bears the heritage of the Islamic empire brought by the invading Moors in the 8th century and the Christian forces that drove the Moors back into North Africa in the 16th century. No better example exists that the medieval Islamic mosque that was converted into a Roman Catholic cathedral in the Andalusian city of Cordoba.
